Crescent Hill, Louisville, Kentucky
You can find Crescent Hill located just a short 4 miles away from east downtown Louisville, Kentucky. Originally this suburb was called “Beargrass” because it sits on a ridge between two forks of Beargrass Creek. It encompasses a surface area of about 590.6 acres and has a population of 7,566 people. They began developing this suburb in the 1850's when the current Frankfort Avenue and the Louisville and Frankfurt railroad were built through the area. In the late 19th century, the old town of “Crescent Hill” became annexed by the city of Louisville. It is a community of well-kept cottages, beautiful churches and involved citizens. Neighbors walk to locally owned businesses and shops. An article in Southern Living Magazine called Crescent Hill one of the South’s best “Comeback Neighborhoods”.
Some attractions in Crescent Hill include but are not limited to, the Louisville Water Company’s Crescent Hill Reservoir, the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the Peterson-Dumesnil House. The famous Peterson-Dumesnil House is a Louisville landmark. The Victorian-Italianate estate is one of the last remaining homes built by Louisvillians in the late 19th century. You can tour this lovely estate as well as rent it for weddings, business luncheons, and bridal showers or just rent a limousine and have a memorable romantic dinner. The estate is closest in proximity to downtown Louisville, the primary reason for its addition to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
Another site to see that’s on the U.S. National Register of Historic places is the Crescent Hill Gatehouse. It was designated a Kentucky Historic Site in 2010. You can enjoy a tour of the fully restored Gothic architecture-style gatehouse building that was constructed in 1879. Although the roof suffered significant damage in the tornado of 1974, the building looks almost identical to the way it did in 1885. There are historical markers on the tour and the site is enjoyed by walkers and runners alike.
Don’t forget this suburb is replete with a park, nine hole layout golf course and a copious amount of restaurants and pubs to choose from. Enjoy sight-seeing in a limousine and no one will miss a thing!
